A summary of Officers Annual Reports
Diving events
- Overseas trips: Cocos Islands, Christmas Island and Bali.
- Intra state dive trips: Two 'Rottnest overnighters', Busselton Jetty and Swan dives from Dunsborough, Key Biscayne, Start of Season Dive, Blue Bay Mandurah, Lake Stockton and Jurien Bay.
- The Fish count, established by Harriet D and carried on by Mervi K, lacked support and was discontinued.
- Regular monthly shore dives, including 13th Karen Mitchell Memorial Dive, were all well supported.
- Some divers attended a rebreather try dive at a local swimming pool.
- Some helped with the Fremantle fishermans harbour cleanup.
Social events
- Organized events were well attended, indicated by numbers in brackets. The January BBQ, the Swan Valley Wine Tour, the Fremantle Tunnel Tour (12) followed by dinner at Ruoccos, the Xmas dinner (33), the Curry Night (24) and the Chicken and Champagne breakfast (33) after the 'Start of Season Dive'.
- There were many spontaneous 'post dive debriefings' at local cafés, especially Ruoccos in Fremantle, a club favourite.
- Monthly social 'pub' meetings at the Moon and Sixpence and the Greenwood Tavern.
- A film night, 'Sharkwater'.
Education and safety
- Skill enhancement courses continued with our 'resident' instructor, Jules H.
- Refresher courses were Rescue refresher and Navigation refresher.
- Certification courses were Nitrox Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver and Rescue Diver.
- There was a combined certification and refresher course for DAN O2 providers.
- A 'chamber dive' to 50 m was laid on for the 'narcoholics'. A valuable experience.
- The 'Safety Stop', a ten minute safety discussion at club monthly meetings, has continued and provides a focus for club diving safety. Various formats (formal and informal) have been tried; both have advantages.
- The Skills Review night was well attended.
- The undersea quiz night with pizza and prizes provided fun and 'edutainment'.
- A number of speakers on the marine environment, research and safety provided draw cards for club meetings.
- Several divers were issued with dive profile recorders to provide data for Peter B’s PhD thesis.
Finance
- Growth in the number of EFTs has required improvements to liason with club event organizers. Once established, the work has run smoothly.
- Club funds have remained around 5K$ but the inflow and outflow of funds has been about ten times that.
- We have made some profits (entertainment books) and some losses (Christmas dinner) and have had a large increase (50%) in the cost of rental of our meeting room.
- Overall, we are still on a sound footing to see us through next year.
Membership
- Most current members have renewed, though a few did not, probably due to work and family committments - we hope to see them back.
- There are seven new members - welcome.
- Our membership for this club year is 61 and comprises 14 family memberships and 32 singles.
- We also have one Club Founder, two Life Members and 2 Honorary Members.
- Our total membership has decreased by one but activity might have increased.
Publications
- Twenty club members have contributed articles for The Logbook,
- Julie H, Ian R and Mervi K provided more than 5 articles each for the year.
- It's good that so many members send in thoughtful articles and photos of events. Please keep it up.
- A new addition is that the Events Page is now placed on the Website whenever The Logbook is published; this can be updated between publication dates as needed.
Website and email services
- This year saw increased web-building activity that was started last year. Services are now with AusieHQ, our web address is the same but matters are now under Club management. Website and email services are now current and maintained regularly and the structure has been fleshed out and now stands at 256 Mb.
- We have received positive feedback and new members from hits.
- The website is now also a storage and access facility for internal documents. We intend to improve this facility.
- The photo-gallery contains contributions from 8 members covering some 32 locations.
- The Useful Information section contains 28 articles covering diving and diving best practice, marine biology, suppliers, and a reading list.
Property
- Additions to the library are Shark Quest (video), Batavia's Graveyard, Diver Down, Introduced Marine Species in WA and Raising the Dead (books). Thanks to the donors.
- Two new First Aid Kits have replaced the old one. The spares kit has been written off.
- An audit has been completed mid-year and all items accounted for.
- Thumb-drives issued to committee members have promoted information sharing, hopefully they are being used for backup too!
Photographic
- A few members attended the magnificent photographic presentation by Martin Edge.
- The Scuba 2 annual Photo Competition was held successfully.
Trophies
The Helmet Award has made a sporadic appearance to the amusement of most and the chagrin of some!
The annual trophies were awarded as follows: -
- Scribe of the Year - Julie H.
- Diver of the Year - Marjon P,
- Club Person of the Year - Dave M.
