Host your own gallery or submit your pics to the webmaster?

There are many freely available photo publishing websites that make publishing your own photo gallery an easy and convenient way of displaying your photos.  In effect you have your own website and it is a good introduction if you are thinking of setting up a website of your own in future.

Once you have set up your gallery and provided the webmaster with the link, your gallery will then be displayed in the Scuba 2 website photo gallery section inside an “i Frame” so it retains the look and feel of the Scuba 2 website re the navigation bar etc.

You can update your gallery at any time, your changes will be automatically updated in the Scuba 2 website and it relieves the webmaster of another task! This is also useful as you become more critical of your own photos and want to edit your gallery accordingly.

So how do you do all this?  There are photo publishing sites such as;

Jalbum

Picassa

Flicker

Photo Bucket

…and more.  Currently the webmaster has used Jalbum to display the Club Events galleries and most of the Members Galleries.  Jalbum is often the preferred choice with the more serious photographer as it provides a very good selection of ‘skins’ and in the webmaster’s opinion has a professional look and feel.  Jalbum is only a photo publishing service where as many of the others available do other things.  Up until recently Jalbum was free and the software still is, however a moderate fee is now payable for hosting your photos as is the case with some of the other services.  It is well worth the fee to support the teams who provide these services.

You can also use these services to publish photos on trips, provide the link to your folks at home so as they can follow your adventures both below and above the water!  They also offer hard copy of your photos in various professional formats and at affordable rates.

Obviously if you publish inappropriate material on your site the webmaster/Scuba 2 will terminate your link to the Scuba 2 website!

If you progress to having your own website that too can be similarly added to the Scuba 2 website.

If this is not for you then submit your photos to the webmaster who will publish your photos on the website for you.  Please note that the webmaster will publish your photos as they are submitted and will NOT edit them for you.  Please do your own photo editing!  With each photo and or gallery provide the caption of each.

Please also submit a photo of your self, preferably with camera, and details of your camera equipment along with a paragraph about your underwater photography journey to date.  These will be used to make up each member’s photo gallery bi line page.

Please contact the webmaster for any more information, advice, tips or hints at any time.

Editing of Photos

Once you start on the underwater photographic journey you will want to edit your photos to some extent.  There are many programs that can do this for you and it can become a whole new dimension for your photography.  Many members have invested in Adobe Lightroom which is aimed at the professional photographer and features powerful editing and photo collection management tools.

Some other software that you can use is;

Irfan View, a free and very powerful photo editing suite.

Serif Photo Plus X5, is a “lower end” photo editing and collection management application.

Please let the webmaster know of other software that you have used so it can be added to the list.

Photographic Courses and Resources

Underwater photography can be a very confusing and bewildering exercise when you start out or dabble, from choosing a camera through to upgrading and getting photos you are pleased with.  There are many books available and of course web resources.  Some that many Scuba 2 members have used and are recommended are

Jeff Mullins photographic courses; one on one workshops in Bali catering for ALL levels and is the X factor many members have found made a huge difference to their progress.
